Pic 1 First thing I did was make a pattern in paper of the vent openings. There are two 'fat' openings and two 'oblong'. Only two patterns need to be made since the one on the opposite side of the hood is mirrored so all you have to do is 'flip' the pattern. This is made from one of the 'fat' openings. I just noticed that the paper is the same color as the background. Bad, bad websiteology. Oh well. Should be good enough to get the point across. Once more, into the breach ...
Pic 2 With a paper pattern to go by, I cut out a form from 3/4" plywood. I used a sureform to make it 'purty' and then attached it to the bench with some sheetrock screws.
Note: It doesn't have to be perfect. The original openings were created by filing up to the brace. Not exactly a precision job my friend. I figure-- get the form near to the original opening and just make sure both left and right sides are the same. Then-- make the opening match the lip.
Pic 3 Repeat the process with the oval vent form.

Pics 4-9 Here is a sequence showing making the rings.
Note: Couple of points.
  1. If I was going to be doing something similar to this in the future, I would consider screwing the forms to something other then the workbench. It would work better if whatever the form was screwed to was out in the open so you would have room to work around it. The aluminum rods were 3' long .. which is longer then the bench is wide.
  2. Once I started trying to form the rod around the form with the body hammer I found that it would have been much better for the form to not be screwed directly to the work surface. You need it up a bit off the work surface so there is room to swing the hammer. Another piece of 3/4" plywood between the form and the work surface would have been fine.
